SURVIVING A NEW PHASE
One minute she’s riding ponies, Daddies little girl But suddenly her life becomes an emotional whirl Losing interest in riding and her boring school life Yet not quite ready for a load of trouble and strife Desiring freedom to have fun, enjoy all she could Yet her parents contained her, frustrated she stood
She made a show of taking the dog for a long walk And met up with her friends to make plans and talk A major crossroad needs debate and common sense It is easy to be tempted to the wrong side of a fence Coping with wild hormones, facing what lies ahead Learning to organise and cope, not hideaway in bed
Decisions lay heavy on the shoulders of young folk Independent and stubborn and treating life as a joke She was no exception and had to learn to slow down Preparing for a bright future with a smile not a frown Nothing’s easy but she was determined to make good It was goodbye to ponies to move on from childhood

WORDS
Letters mean nothing if they don’t form a word Typing without looking, the result often absurd Sign language is great, a spoken word is unique Giving most of us a voice, opportunities to seek
It is fascinating to hear different pronunciations People and accents from myriads of destinations Words can cause confusion, but with a lot of fun Children so amusing as they try to ask a question
There are words that have more than one meaning People invent their own, that often need screening New generations are more outrageous than the last Some old words survive, like a blast from the past
Words make up stories, poems and interesting news People can air their thoughts and consider all views Communication is easy, but the spoken word is best To speak words face to face simply passes every test

Love's Triumph

LOVE’S TRIUMPH
Sitting by a window, his eyes were sharp and clear Knowing that soon his sweetest love would appear The sun twinkled amidst a haze of scented flowers He watched and waited, as he done for many hours
Peeping round the curtains, his heart missing a beat A shadow emerged together with softly tapping feet As she paused, looking up and risking a gentle wave A quick nod in reply was the only indication he gave
He swiftly gathered his bags leaving at a jaunty pace Soon again enraptured by her beautifully framed face Soft golden curls tumbled as their lips melted in a kiss Never before experiencing such emotion of sheer bliss
Hand in hand they walked away, destination unknown Whatever the consequence, they would tackle it alone Forbidding orders create a stubbornness seated within Together they were strong and love united would win

PEOPLE WATCHING
People watching, a fascinating revealing trait Passing the time when faced with a long wait No judgement or hassle, fun with imagination Try sitting and watching in a busy train station
Expressions on faces give an insight to a mind One can smile with amusement, not be unkind Hurried steps, a frown, perhaps someone’s late Eyes searching round, maybe waiting for a date
Folks wandering, not knowing which way to go Drifting with crowds, meandering with the flow Notice boards flashing with information on show People shouting at kiosks, with their tales of woe
Struggling with heavy cases, no help comes along Pausing to have coffee, hoping it is hot and strong The hustle and bustle has an atmosphere of its own Nowadays interrupted by strange tones of a ‘phone
Relaxing with a smile, watching the world pass by Raises thoughts and emotions to an inquisitive eye It’s good to observe, leave with a spring in the step Feeling free and individual, something not to forget

CHOCOLATE HEAVEN
Chocolate, mouth-watering comfort and sheer delight The mere mention of the word and eyes become alight A promise of heaven to calm nerves and a crazy mind Never mind the guilt trip and folks trying to be unkind Those precious moments, to enjoy and savour the taste Capture the divine pleasure, not a single sliver to waste
A self-satisfied smile and a little voice that says yummy Sucking on messy fingers just like a child with a dummy Confident knowing you’ve some more chocolate to hide And when the urge is there take your taste-buds for a ride Coveting the hidden treat with secrecy heightening desire The emotions are inspired and the spirit sparkles with fire
Blemishes on the skin and gaining a few pounds in weight Acceptable hazards for the chocolate gift, and simply fate

HOPE
Where is the hope without dreams and wishes Something to ease the chore of washing dishes Cleaning the house, cooking and ironing to do Opportunities to day dream are often quite few
Where is the hope with no friends there to share No-one to talk to, happy knowing that they care Goading one into action offering help and advice A sympathetic ear as unshed tears cloud the eyes
Where is the hope when days just blend together Oblivious of time and unconcerned with weather Imagination dulls as pictures fade from the mind A greyness overtakes, leaving brightness behind
Hope lies eternal, deep within each heart and soul Inspiring determination where nothing takes a toll Keeping true to oneself, not following like a sheep To smile at everything, dreams sweet when asleep

A Bit of Thought

A BIT OF THOUGHT
Oh no not again I moan and mutter to myself The things I want are always on the top shelf The days are past for climbing up the shelves People around only bothered with themselves
Finding it all frustrating, I now have a choice And feeling positive I suddenly find my voice Waiting until a likely victim comes into sight I pounce in request, sure to give them a fright
Usually they respond and reach the item I need Sometimes they glare and then retreat, at speed Trying to find an assistant is just a hopeless task Although I could walk to a service desk and ask
The service desk is at the other end of the store The queue is long, I can’t be bothered anymore I go without the item, the store missing out too Why not duplicate items lower down, just a few
It cannot be that difficult making an easier shop And would certainly stop many throwing a strop A bit of thoughtful assistance for us shorter folk Inspiring more spending, surely a master stroke

YOU ARE ON MY MIND
Every waking hour and always haunting my dreams You are on my mind When rain glistens on cobbles, road running streams You are on my mind When the world is obscured by mists of swirling fog You are on my mind When I am up bright and early, walking with the dog You are on my mind When I am lost in soft white flakes of spinning snow You are on my mind When I am frozen to the bone with my face all aglow You are on my mind When I’m gazing in wonder at the sky alive with stars You are on my mind When brooding clouds explode to leave a trail of scars You are on my mind When I follow the drifting moon playing hide and seek You are on my mind When I smile with a remembrance of our past so unique You are on my mind When I can’t sleep and tears flow silently down my face You are on my mind When I escape into imagination and see a different place You are on my mind When I count my blessings for the memories in my heart You are on my mind When I feel the richness in my soul that the images impart You are on my mind

HAPPY FLYING
My three baby Blackbirds have flown their nest And the parents are away, for a well-earned rest There’s little evidence in their abandoned home They were so well protected until ready to roam A rich abundance of food helped them to mature Though their future always exciting and obscure I wonder where they go, on the flight to freedom The world to them must seem huge and awesome Filled with danger and challenges just to survive But for now we wish them the joy of being alive

A Lesson in the Wilderness

A LESSON IN THE WILDERNESS
Laughing and joking, overflowing with high spirits Scoffing at danger thinking they knew all the limits Well stocked with food, water and medical supplies And nets to protect them from mosquitoes and flies Contingency plans ready and equipment all in place Filled with enthusiasm they set off at a jaunty pace
An exciting, mysterious world, the jungle beckoned After steady progress, their resolve never weakened Exhausted and pitching their tents they settled down The four of them alone and far from their hometown Elated, yet fearful, as jungle noises kept them awake Ignoring sore blisters, tummy rumbles and backache
That night the heartless rain never ceased its torment Releasing its bitter tears in endless torrents of lament An eerie mist prevailed, when at last the siege abated Amidst rivulets of mud all their things were saturated All their best efforts had not protected as they thought Survival the true reality from adventure they’d sought
Not sure which way to go they were confused and lost The damp murky air changing everything, to their cost They decided to sit things out and ration their supplies Each taking a turn to stay alert, the situation to apprise Using an old-fashioned compass they squelched along Uplifting their hearts by continually bursting into song
The roar of tumbling water rewarded confidences held Soon to reach their goal, knowing they had all excelled The weary explorers embraced the friends waiting there Grateful in seeing them and happily accepting their care But harsh lessons had been learnt, to stand in good stead Take some time to consider, don’t be ready to rush ahead
