today was my stepfather's funeral. this picture was taken on my first communion, when he and my mom were first dating. i was 6 years old, my mom was 26 and he was 31. my brothers: left is three years older, and right is one year older, than i am. they married on my ninth birthday and had my third brother a couple of years later. imagine a single man taking on a young woman and her three children. few would manage it with the grace that he exhibited. but of course, he was head over heels in love with my mom ... and a very fine man who i initially called uncle and then dad.

foto friday - v is for volunteer

in 2006 i organized a small team of gals to volunteer with me in haiti. these pics were taken at three angels orphanage. other places like the children's hospital (where we spent most of our time caring for children who were very ill ... many dying of aids) would not allow us to take pictures. a lot of those children looked like the dear ones you might see in a world vision commercial. of course we were fine with not taking pics ... as we weren't there for that ... but it is nice to have some to remember our time ... and the many children who are still there and in need of a little tenderness. i haven't been back since ... but two team members have organised teams before and after the earthquake.

my dad didn't know that i liked fishing until a very few years ago. i have two older brothers who he always took on such trips. i talked him into taking me with him a very few years ago, against his quibbling that i wouldn't like it. i spent 12 of the best hours of my life out on that boat with him the first day and our relationship has never been the same since then. this pic was taken on lake 'something' (i'm so bad at names) in the interior of bc while visiting with my dad again this past summer. it depicts how i feel about fishing on a beautiful blue lake under a beautiful blue sky with my dad.

foto friday - toys - rule of thirds

i am inspired! when i took my dogs out for a walk in the woods this afternoon, i decided to take along my favourite toy ~ my canon 40D. after applying the rule of thirds to the editing process, i have a collage for foto friday that i'm happy with.
after cropping my pics i noticed the following:
1. the lower line is aligned to pearl's back and the uprooted tree trunk hits the upper line. sometimes highlighting two items in a pic has escaped me. i was in my happy place after editing this one.
2. same idea with the second pic: bailey now sits nicely on the right. after the first edit i noticed that part of the tree line and pathway were close to the top line ... a little tweak and a more interesting pic. yes!!!
3. i struggled with whether or not to edit the next pic of pearl ... but am happy with the result, after going back and forth many times. her back hits the lower line ... the darker left side of the tree and her leg align nicely on the left line. this makes the darker tree in the background look more interesting also.
4. in the fourth pic; moving bailey from the middle of the photo, and having his leg and eye hit the left line, worked out really well. he looks more dignified and interesting with this edit ... his focus tells you something about his character and is something to be curious about.
5. pearls eyes now line up to the lower line in the last pic, which really highlights her personality and makes the pathway look more interesting also. she's a little heart grabber for sure.
it's nice to have these pics of the three of us doing one of our favourite things together ... walking unleashed in the park  the moody weather, walking, my dogs, my camera and the rule of thirds has made for a very good day indeed.

these pics were taken at bruce beach in ontario, canada (just south of kincardine)
a few years ago a girlfriend invited me to visit her at her cottage on this beach - which is the nicest fresh water beach i have stayed at in ontario. i've rented a cottage along this beach for the past two summers, and hope to rent one this year also. it is beautiful, peaceful ... a great place to rest and to have company. i love taking long walks along the beach ... swimming ... taking photographs ... reading, having fires ... and especially enjoy taking a dip late at night so that i can float on my back and star gaze.
